Dramatic photos have shown a car engulfed in flames at one of the busiest roundabouts in Derbyshire. Motorists faced delays at Toyota Island as firefighters worked to put out the blaze which left a red Ford car totally burnt-out on the pavement.

Drivers navigating the busy traffic island, which takes drivers onto the A50 at junction 4 or the A38 towards Derby or Burton, faced tailbacks due to the incident yesterday, Tuesday, August 23. Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit confirmed no one had been injured in the blaze, which officers described as a “catastrophic engine fail” from the owner’s newly-purchased 15-year-old car.

An officer shared the photos and details of the incident in a tweet posted just after 8.35am this morning. It reads: “J4 A50. This was the reason for any delays yesterday.
