A Derbyshire woman-beater held a knife to his partner’s face and cut her above the eye after heavily drinking vodka all morning. Derby Crown Court heard how Ryan Roberts then dropped the blade and told the woman he would kill himself and “take your mother with me”.

The dad-of-two also head-butted the victim while she was making a sandwich and their children were playing in the garden. And in a victim impact statement the woman told how she “just wants a better life without Ryan in it”.

Jailing the 32-year-old for 12 months, Judge Robert Egbuna said: “No doubt because you were in drink and angry you behaved in the way that you did. But you had a weapon, a knife, you held it to your partner’s face and she thought she was going to die and you can understand that.

“The next thing she recalls is blood flowing from her face and then you uttered the words ‘I swear on my grandfather’s life I am going to take my own life and take your mother’s as well’. She was petrified and taking a knife to your partner just can’t be ignored.”

Lauren Fisher, prosecuting, said Roberts and the victim had been in a relationship which she said was “brilliant at first”, and that they have two young children together. She said that altered when his behaviour changed earlier this year after he lost a family member, lost his job and began drinking heavily and taking cocaine.

The prosecutor said: “The children were playing in the garden. She was making a sandwich and he was standing next to her, they were bickering when he suddenly head-butted her to the cheek and left the house. The second assault happened on July 31 when she had decided she wanted to end the relationship and asked him to leave.

“During the morning he had been drinking vodka, he was pacing about, agitated, he was getting angrier, he got in her face and pushed her against a wall, she then noticed he had a kitchen knife in his hand. She did not know what he was going to do, she thought she was going to die, he held the knife against her face and she felt blood running down her face.

“She was crying, telling him to stop, he dropped the knife and started crying and apologising. He said ‘you are going to regret this, I am going to kill myself and take your mother with me’.”

Miss Fisher read out a victim impact statement made by the woman. In it she said: “I am completely fed up with Ryan, I want a better life for me and my children, I just want a better life without Ryan in it.”

Roberts, of Langwith Road, Shirebrook, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault. He has six convictions for seven offences including battery of the same victim from 2018.

Sonal Ahya, mitigating, said her client has had “a dependency on alcohol for the past four or five years” which increased when his grandfather died and he lost his job which he had held for 11 years.

She said: “There is nothing that can excuse or justify the sort of behaviour demonstrated towards somebody he is supposed to love, protect and care for. Things spiralled out of control, he was unable to control his emotions and he lashed out at his partner while heavily intoxicated.

“He is genuinely sorry he treated his partner this way.” As well as the jail term, Judge Egbuna handed Roberts a restraining order until further order.
