A Burton Albion player is set to face trial on three charges of rape. William Kokolo has been accused of the offences which are alleged to have happened in Aston, near Birmingham, in February, this year.

He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 30, reports Staffordshire Live, and his case has now been sent to Birmingham Crown Court where he is set to stand trial. The 22-year-old League One player, who lives in Clay Street, Burton, will next appear before the court on September 27, or ‘such other date, time or place as the Crown Court directs’.

A club statement from Burton Albion FC said it was aware of the charges and had spoken to the player and his legal team. The statement reads: “Burton Albion is fully aware of the charges that have been made against one of our players and the club has spoken to the player and his legal representatives. As this is an ongoing legal process, the club is unable to make any further comment until legal proceedings are concluded.”

It was announced that the young footballer, a French national, was joining the Brewers back in January after he had come up through the youth ranks at AS Monaco before joining now Championship outfit Sunderland AFC back in 2017. In March 2020 he signed a two-year deal at fellow Championship side Middlesbrough and spent time out on loan last season with Darlington.
