The husband of Freda Walker, who died at her home in Langwith Junction, Shirebrook, back in January this year, has sadly also died. The news of the death of Ken Walker was confirmed by Derbyshire police today (Thursday, September 1).

His death comes months after he and his wife, Freda, 86, were involved in a horrific incident at their house on Station Road on Friday, January 14. The couple were found by a concerned neighbour at 9am on Saturday, January 15.

Mrs Walker was pronounced dead at the scene while Mr Walker, 88, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition having suffered serious injuries during the incident. Vasile Culea, 33, was later arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder, charges he denies.

It was an incident that left the village of Langwith Junction shocked and led to a number of tributes being made to the popular couple. Mr Walker had been a local councillor for many years.

In a statement back in January, Shirebrook Town Council said: “It was with great shock and sadness that we learnt of the devastating news of the incident at Councillor and Mrs Walker’s home address that has left Cllr Ken Walker with critical injuries and caused the passing of Mrs Freda Walker.

“Ken has been a member of the town council for many years and up until recently also represented the town on the district council, where he was the chairman for ten years. Freda, having supported Ken throughout with his public duties, was also a much-respected member of the town who has been involved in a lot of charity work in the community.

“Our thoughts remain with Ken, and we hope that the fighting spirit we all know him for pulls him through this awful situation.”

Ken Walker was last seen in public in April this year when he attended the funeral of his wife, Freda, at Holy Trinity Parish Church in Shirebrook. Mr Walker had to be helped into the church by family members as he was in a wheelchair, still recovering from the events of that night back in January.

In a statement on Thursday, September 1, a spokesman for Derbyshire police confirmed that Mr Walker had died at Kingsmill Hospital in Mansfield.

He said: “Ken Walker, the husband of alleged murder victim Freda Walker, has died.

“The couple were found by a concerned neighbour at 9am on Saturday 15 January at their home in Station Road, Langwith Junction. Freda, 86, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ken was found with serious injuries that left him requiring hospital treatment.

“On Monday 29 August Ken died at Kingsmill Hospital, Mansfield. His family are aware, and our thoughts are with them, as well as his friends and the Langwith Junction community he served as a councillor, at this time. A post-mortem has yet to be conducted to ascertain the cause of death of the 88-year-old.”
