The former Conservative MP for South Derbyshire, Edwina Currie, has caused money saving expert Martin Lewis to hold his head in his hands after she attempted to provide viewers with a “dirt cheap” tip to help people pay less for their energy this winter.

Mrs Currie, who represented her constituency in the county between 1983 and 1997 and lives in Whaley Bridge in the Derbyshire Peak District, suggested this morning, September 5, that people should place some reflective foil behind their radiators to retain more heat in their homes as the colder period of the year approaches.

She said: “It really works. It makes the whole room nice and warm, and it mean you can turn down your thermostat without it causing you any more discomfort.” Mrs Currie then went on to say that people of her generation had lived for years of their lives in houses with no central heating.

She added: “Most people my age have lived in houses without central heating, but we are dependent on it now. And just that kind of little thing makes such a difference. Moving the sofa away from the radiator, you don’t want to be heating the sofa, you want to be heating the room”

The clip has since been shared on social media, with people suggesting that it is a “useless” and “patronising” suggestion. Journalist and author, Poorna Bell, said: “What an entirely useless statement. Like saying well we all used to deliver mail by horse, lived through the bubonic plague, used candles instead of electricity.

“I assume Edwina uses a mobile phone and not messenger pigeon? Has a heated home? Uses a refrigerator instead of an outdoor cave?”

Others however were more sympathetic and said Mrs Currie was only trying to help. Another person said: “I’m not her greatest fan, but they aren’t useless tips. She also isn’t a politician or an expert so what do they expect?”
