Small businesses have had a lot to deal with over the past few years. If national lockdowns which led to months of little or no income weren’t tough enough, the cost of living crisis has become another major obstacle which many will not be able to survive.

Rising energy bills have been in the headlines a lot recently as people worry about being able to afford to heat their homes. And these concerns will be shared by small businesses that struggle to keep afloat.

The Express reports that the latest quarterly report by the Federation of Small Business (FSB) on Small Business Index (SBI) found that 53.4 percent of small firms predict that they will either stay the same size or downsize or even close their business.

The report is a major concern with small businesses playing a vital role in the economy and providing a chance for anyone to set up their own business to earn a living.

Martin McTague, the national chair of the Federation of Small Businesses said: “A healthy business ecosystem requires businesses of all sizes to be able to realise their ambitions – from one-person start-ups with a great idea, through the small and medium-sized businesses which form the bedrock of the economy, right up to the largest companies, who rely on countless smaller suppliers and service providers.”

We want our readers to tell us the best small or independent businesses in the area and what makes them so special. It could be a cafe, shop or something else.
