There is something fascinating about violent bolts of lightning painting the Derbyshire sky. Harsh streaks of light followed by loud rumbles of thunder can strike fear in some and delight in others. In our photo gallery below and the video above, our photographers and Derbyshire Live readers have captured the drama.

Over the past couple of days parts of Derbyshire have experienced violent thunderstorms, with the Met Office warning that there could be “some damage to a few buildings and structures”. On Sunday night, September 4, parts of north Derbyshire were exposed to a tremendous storm as many woke in the middle of the night to flashes of lightning.

Following this, the night sky in parts of Derby last night (September 5) were filled with crackles of sizzling lightning. Some of our readers, as well as our photographer, managed to snap some of the scenes above Derbyshire last night.

A yellow weather warning had been in place overnight in Derbyshire due to the thunderstorms. The warning for heavy rain, strong gusts and lightning stated that there could be localised flooding, as well as tricky driving conditions.

The forecast for the rest of the week includes a mixture of heavy rain, sunshine and cloud with a top temperature of 22 degrees Celsius on Tuesday but gradually getting cooler as we head towards the weekend. The yellow weather warning is expected to clear by dawn in Derbyshire with no further warnings for the rest of the week as things stand.

See below for pictures of lightning illuminating Derbyshire skies.
