Peak District villagers discover Second World War gun in shed 50 years after moving in

Derbyshire homeowners have been left stunned after discovering a 9mm Second World War handgun in a money bag inside a locked box in their shed 50 years after moving into their house. They swiftly called the police at around 10.10am following the find on September 5.

Officers then attended the property in the Peak District village of Hartington to safeguard the area after the dramatic discovery of the firearm. The weapon has been retrieved by police and has now been made safe.

Derbyshire Dales Police said on Twitter: “9mm WW2 handgun found in a lock box in a shed 50 years after moving in to a property. As a shift we were wondering if the money bag was ever evidence?”

A Derbyshire police spokesperson added: “We were called just before 10.10am yesterday (September 5) to a property in Hartington by a resident who had found a historic firearm. The item was taken by officers and made safe.”
