Young man accused of trying to murder Derby police officer

A young man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a road collision in Derby left a police officer seriously injured. The incident happened around 12.30am, the early hours of Sunday, September 4 in The Wardwick.

The officer suffered a serious leg injury and is still in hospital recovering. Mubarak Hussein of Stockton Close, Sheffield, was arrested on Tuesday, September 6, and was charged in the early hours of this morning, Thursday September, 8.

The 21-year-old has also been charged with drug offences, fraud and traffic offences. He appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on the morning of Thursday, September 8, and has been remanded into custody.

Chief Constable Rachel Swann said: “Our thoughts are with our officer and his family, and we wish him well as he continues to recover in hospital.

“I would like to thank the public for their help during this investigation and the kind words and comments that have been received over the past days.

“Police officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public every day and should never have to tolerate violence against them when they are carrying out their duties.”

Derbyshire police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and would specifically like to hear from anyone who may have dash cam or CCTV footage from The Wardwick, Becket Street, Curzon Street and Uttoxeter New Road between 9pm on Saturday September 3 and 1am on Sunday September 4.
