A man in his 30s has been left badly injured following what is believed to be a shooting in a quiet Derby residential street. Three teenage boys have been arrested in connection with reports of a shooting on a Derby yesterday evening, Wednesday, September 14.

Derbyshire Police were called to the incident just before 7.10pm on Ilford Road, Mackworth. The boys, one aged 17 and two aged 15, from Derby, are currently in police custody after a man in his 30s was found with wounds to his stomach and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

It is reported that a second man also suffered a cut to the head after it is believed he was assaulted nearby. Detectives are supporting both victims involved. There will be a heightened police presence in area.

Former Mayor of Derby and ex-Derby City Councillor for Mackworth, Paul Pegg, said he had made complaints to the police recently about crime and anti-social behaviour issues in the suburb.

He said: “At a public meeting around a month ago I told the local sergeant about gangs of youths riding around the estate on scooters with their faces covered by scarves causing problems and concerns for the people living here.

“No-one is doing anything about it and it was only a matter of time until something as serious as this happened. Ever since David Coleman (former Chief Constable of Derbyshire between 2001 and 2007) left, community policing in Derby has been dwindling. Under the current regime it is non-existent.”

Chief Superintendent Dave Cox, who is charge of policing in Derby, said: “I understand that this incident will be of significant concern to the community. Firearms offences in Derbyshire are rare, and a specialist team of detectives are investigating the events of last night.

“There will be more police in Mackworth today and I ask that anyone with any information please contact us as soon as possible. We are currently reviewing our patrol strategies as it is extremely important that residents of Derby feel safe in their communities.”

A police spokesperson has told Derbyshire Live that an investigation is ongoing, and people will see an increased police presence in the area while officers carry out enquiries and patrols.

They added: “At this stage we believe this is an isolated incident. We would like to hear from anyone in the Ilford Road and the surrounding streets around the time of the incident, and in the moments before.
