Updates from London as thousands head to capital for the Queen’s state funeral

We’re in London today as thousands head to the capital to say their final farewells to Queen Elizabeth II. After lying in state, Her Majesty’s funeral will take place today (September 19), with the service starting at 11am.

It will be attended by members of the Royal Family, including King Charles III, the Queen Consort and the Prince and Princess of Wales. Many senior UK politicians and leaders from across the globe will also be among the 2,000 guests in Westminster Abbey.

Millions are expected to tune in to watch on television or online. Since the Queen’s death in Balmoral on September 8, the nation has been in a period of mourning.

Her body was taken in its coffin to Edinburgh before it made its journey to London, where it has been lying in state for four days. Since its arrival, thousands have made the journey to London to pay their respects, with a number of notable figures queuing for hours to see Her Majesty’s coffin.

The funeral service is expected to last around 55 minutes. The Last Post will be played, which will be followed by a national two-minute silence.

The Queen’s coffin will then be drawn to Wellington Arch, before being taken to St George’s Chapel at Windsor for a private family service at 7.30pm. Here, she will be buried with her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
