A Derbyshire village pub that was much-loved by locals closed its doors for the final time last week, leaving many residents saddened. The Punchbowl, in West Hallam, now appears to sit empty since its permanent closure.

The pub itself, which dates back to 1754, now has a sign outside which reads: “Sorry we are permanently closing doors on or before Friday, September 16. Matt and Jo.”

It is not yet known why the pub, which according to villagers was loved for its pie nights and Quiz nights, has taken the decision to close its doors for good.

David Stephenson, 83, who lives in West Hallam, recalled a number of fond memories he had about the Punchbowl. He said: “It was a very nice place, it’s a real shame, a real loss to the community.

They used to have a quiz on a Monday evening, and we [David and his wife] went every Monday. They used to have pies on Wednesday, so we’d go then.

“We also used to go on Friday and Saturday evenings too, after buying lottery tickets. I go for a walk two or day times a day, and I walked past the Punchbowl and I saw on the blackboard about a fortnight ago saying it was going to close, and now I’ve seen this one saying it has actually closed.”

Other residents we spoke to outside the pub said they were saddened by its closure, but hopeful that it would remain a pub in the future. We have attempted to contact the Punchbowl for more details on its reasons for closure.
