For many people in the industry, London Fashion Week is the highlight of their calendar and a chance for the great and good to show off their collections. For one Derbyshire hairdresser, a mysterious invitation to work at the event turned out to be an incredibly rewarding adventure.

Michelle Dalman, 31, owns MD Hair at the Glass Yard in Chesterfield and prior to going down to the capital last weekend told Derbyshire Live she had no idea what was waiting for her. “I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s a massive opportunity for myself, I don’t know anything, all I know is that I need to be in London for an early start.”

Fast forward a few days and Mrs Dalman told us how her weekend had gone working on the Rixo Addition show: “We got down on Friday and found out the location and the call time and you just go. You just turn up and you’ve got two images on your mirror and you just create those styles.”

Mrs Dalman was asked to produce the hairstyles on models under the noses of some of the biggest names in the business and admitted to being incredibly nervous before it all got underway at 7.30am on Friday, September 16. “It was very daunting because even though I’ve been hairdressing for over 16 years, you still think ‘oh god what if I can’t do it’ or if you get a bit of stage fright, but it was alright, I smashed it!”

As this was London Fashion Week there wasn’t any time to talk to the models, whose hair was being styled, about where they were going on their holidays. Instead, it was all about getting the work done as professionally and as quickly as possible before the models headed out onto the catwalks.

“You’ve got photographers there, magazine editors there and the actual brand photographers there. You’ve also got people videoing you, at one point I had three cameras all pointed at me and you’re trying to work at a fast pace, but the adrenalin keeps you going.”

Mrs Dalman also offered an insight into the chaos of the backstage area at London Fashion Week with as many as four people all working together at the same time on the same model ensuring their hair is right, the makeup is done and the nails are perfect. The models then go to the lead stylist who will either let them go out or send them back if something isn’t right: “Luckily none got sent back in for me.”

Mrs Dalman was working from 7.30am to 2.30pm with a constant stream of models coming through to have their hairstyles “One side [of the room] is all hair and the other is makeup but at one point I was on the makeup side doing a model’s hair because of the time.”

Once all the work was done it was time to reflect on what they had achieved: “You just feel on a high, like buzzing, you feel like you’ve done it and then we all went for a drink afterwards to celebrate.”

The 31-year-old says she’s still on a high days after the event and has even got in touch with some others to let them know that she’s available for the next event, Paris Fashion Week, in October: “I’ve got the bug for it now, the taste for it”.
