Below is a letter published in the Derbyshire Telegraph on Tuesday, September 20:

It was bound to happen, of course, given the current state of the Conservative Party, but it appears that one 10 Downing Street incompetent has been replaced by another.

The imminent lifting of the fracking ban by Truss is fraught with risk. Lancashire suffered 58 fracking-induced earthquakes when it was used last time, with Blackpool on the receiving end of one measuring 2.9 on the Richter Scale.

I expect there will be a rush of Tory voters writing in to defend this decision, but I’m willing to bet not one of them will be living in an area abutting a proposed fracking site. All I can say is wrap up your china and glass folks and prepare for the shakes.

Astoundingly, our new Chancellor is considering scrapping the cap on bankers’ bonuses. As a gesture of contempt and indifference towards ordinary households at a financially horrendous time, Mr Kwarteng’s idea is hard to beat.

If he and Ms Truss think this is the road to another Conservative election victory, they must have taken leave of their senses.

If they want to go to the country on a platform of bigger bonuses for bankers and wage crackdowns on nurses, care home staff, teachers, cleaners and other emergency workers then they should put that to the test immediately and call an election.

Phil Garner, Littleover
